New Year’s Levée in Don Valley West

  • Community Update

MPP Stephanie Bowman, the provincial representative for Don Valley West, and her federal counterpart MP Rob Oliphant co-hosted their New Year’s Levée on January 15, 2023, at the Toronto Botanical Gardens. This event celebrated the community’s spirit, the contributions of the Queen’s Jubilee winners, and connected old and new friends alike. The Levée was attended by residents of Don Valley West to commemorate the contributions of various leaders and advocates, the dedication of the Queen’s Jubilee winners, and to reflect on the lasting positive impacts of community support.

Canada’s History with the New Year’s Levée

The New Year’s Levée is an annual Canadian social event held by the Governor General of Canada, the Lieutenant Governor, military establishments, municipalities, and other institutions. The event originates from the Levée du Soleil, or Rising of the Sun, instituted by King Louis XIV (1643 – 1715). King Louis XIV made it his custom to receive male subjects in the Royal bedchamber just after arising, which led to its unique name. As settlers were widely scattered and separated from the seat of government, the Levée became an opportunity for village leaders and public dignitaries to gather and be heard. The fur trade further entrenched this Canadian phenomenon in Canada’s culture as fur traders traditionally paid their respects to their government representatives on New Year’s Day. This eventually led to the custom of celebrating the Levée at the start of each calendar year.

The New Year’s Levées to Come

Over the years, Canadians have kept this tradition alive by celebrating the New Year’s Levée with vibrant social events to reflect on the community’s support. The New Year’s Levées are held by representatives of the government as well as many other institutions that are found here in Canada. Like the traditions of Canada’s founding settlers, the Levée is an occasion for festive celebrations, community spirit, and recognition of all contributions made by the community.

Thank you to all who joined MPP Stephanie Bowman and MP Rob Oliphant in celebrating the New Year’s Levée. Don Valley West would not be a thriving community without its residents, leaders, and supporters. We thank you all and hope to see everyone at the next New Year’s Levée in 2024!
